Stories, Art, and Kindness: PahinaHinahon at the Quezon City Public Library

The Quezon City Public Library, together with the Book and Art-Venture Club, celebrated the 43rd National Children’s Book Day with this year’s theme PahinaHinahon - a joyful gathering of stories, creativity, and community at the Quezon City Public Library. Together, they brightened up the children’s and each other’s day by listening to stories and doing artworks.
For the program, Ms. Mary Ann L. Bernal, the Assistant City Librarian gave the welcoming remarks, which were preceded by the national anthem and a prayer. After an inspiring message by Ms. Mariza G. Phico, an entertaining puppet show about the wonders of reading took place.
At the heart of the event, the Book and Art-Venture Club did a mini theatrical reading of Ang Pambihirang Sombrero, written and illustrated by Jose Miguel Tejido and published by Adarna House.
Together with the performance of the members and the audience’s participation, they followed the journey of an ordinary hat turned extraordinary because of small acts of kindness by the main character’s community.
The message of the story may be small, but it is very powerful: the tiniest compassion towards people can turn something very meaningful, reflecting the heart of PahinaHinahon. Every page you read teaches you many things- not just facts, but also about becoming a kinder, caring and understanding person.
A library also plays a very important part in this journey. It’s not just a place where the books are; it’s a space where children are free to read, create and have a little more hinahon.
As the journey of the hat continued, the children did artworks of things that make them feel calm and happy and attached them onto the hat.

The Book and Artventure Club extends its gratitude to the Quezon City Public Library, especially to Ms. Restynne, Ms. Mary Ann, Ms. Mariza, and Ms. Ana, as it wasn’t for this event that the hat would’ve been possible. We are also very grateful to the volunteers, parents, and children who listened, participated, and created.

As the children left carrying their artwork, they also carried something less visible but just as precious: a story experienced together, a lesson in kindness, and a memory shaped by books, art, and community.
May they continue to find libraries that welcome them, books that inspire them, and stories that help them become even kinder people.
