BAV members Greta, Spencer, and Yumi embarked in an exciting adventure taking place in Filipino prehistory!
Lolong Time Ago is a book that takes us back a lolong time ago(pun intended) in Philippine history. The book covers our prehistory right before we were colonized, like creation myths, traditions, communities, culture, etc!
When it came time for the activities, we were given menu-style prompts with the fourth option giving us the freedom to do whatever we want as long as it was related to the chapter we were studying, which is good because it provides you with an opportunity to get creative if you do not like the 3 options given to you. (show some artworks of ours that we did) All of our projects were some form of art, like drawing, painting, and even crafting our own stone tools!
“My personal favorite was the fashion edit, where I got to create a magazine style page featuring early Filipino fashion.” -Yumi
After we finished chapter 4, we went to the National Museum of Anthropology. There were so many things to see there. We learned new things, and we learned more about the things we already knew from reading the book! The museum was very informative and fun, and we all enjoyed learning more things about our nation’s past.
"If the Philippines was never colonized"
And after all the lessons, we all got together for the final project, which was creating a painting with the theme of “If the Philippines was never colonized”.
So why were doing all of these activities important to understand our country’s prehistory for kids today? Well, understanding our country’s history can cause a lot of things. It can make them learn how to care about nature and ancient sites and can also make them feel proud of their heritage and see how early humans survived without having technology. So, books like A Lolong Time Ago can help children who are curious about their national identity, learn from past mistakes and to make the future a better place.
